This one was definitely a collect call.
The Black Phone–from Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures–recently made a little bit of history at the box office, as it passed the $100-million mark worldwide. And, at the same time, the film is available at home on-demand as of today, July 15.
Putting its success in some sort of perspective, The Black Phone–from director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill–is now the biggest non-sequel horror flick of the pandemic era. The other horror titles that have earned more over that time–A Quiet Place: Part II, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Halloween Kills and the fifth Scream–have all been part of a franchise.
The film–based on a 2004 Joe Hill short story–stars Ethan Hawke as The Grabber and Mason Thames as young Finney Shaw–along with Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, James Ransone and E. Roger Mitchell.
In the movie, Shaw is abducted by The Grabber and trapped in a soundproof basement. But, when a disconnected black phone on the wall starts to ring, the young boy discovers he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And those voices “are dead-set on making sure what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.”
With some talk about a possible sequel floating around, keep reading Horror News Network for the latest on the future of The Black Phone.
