YOUNGSTOWN — The Butler Institute of American Art is in the midst of building a $2.6 million, 3,810-square-foot expansion to its building on Wick Avenue in Youngstown, expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Employees with Imperial Glazing Concepts of Niles this week are working on the exterior windows. Inside, carpenter Jason Abbott of Howland, working for Valley Acoustic Inc. of Youngstown, moved plywood into place to be attached to interior studs in the addition.

Also working inside on new gas lines was plumber Keith Hall of Canfield, working for Prout Boiler Heating and Weld Inc. of Youngstown.

The new space will have four levels and will include two large exhibition spaces for large art. Executive Director Louis Zona has said a wall in the expansion will house a Pierre Soulages ceramic tile mural that, for now, fills the massive front window of the Medici Museum in Howland. Courts have ruled the mural is the property of the Butler.
