LAKE PLACID — John Brown Lives and the Grand Adirondack Hotel are teaming up to stage the 7th annual Blues at Timbuctoo concert at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site in Lake Placid on Sunday.
The daylong festival will be held in the upper meadow at the farm from noon to 5 p.m. Organizers are encouraging those interested in attending to pack a picnic and water, bring a chair or blanket, and dress for the weather.
Bluesman Jerry Dugger, the inspiration for Blues at Timbuctoo, heads the line-up with his bass baritone voice and musicianship, extensive repertoire and heartfelt performances. Joining Dugger in the lineup are keyboardist, singer and songwriter Dave Keyes; Tana Asili, a New York-based Puerto Rican singer known for her fusion of Afro-Latin, reggae and rock; Marie Marie, a cover band from Westport that plays mainly pop and rock covers and acoustic ballads that span the decades; and Yacouba Sissoko, master kora player who comes from a family line of Malian musicians dating back centuries.
“As part of our new Hands-on History project for teachers and students, we are very excited that Yacouba is staying an extra day to be a guest artist at Willsboro Central School,” said Martha Swan, of John Brown Lives. “Introducing students to the rich histories and cultural contributions of west African peoples through music will open minds and hearts, and we are very grateful to WCS Music Teacher Jennifer Moore for this opportunity.”
“We are so honored to welcome master musician and culture-bearer, Yacouba Sissoko, to Willsboro CSD,” Moore said. “Students will have the opportunity to hear new sounds and directly experience the impact of story and song from a distant culture that retains a meaningful connection to part of our own Adirondack story.
“We’re looking forward to learning from Yacouba and thank John Brown Lives! and Blues at Timbuctoo for making such an opportunity possible,” she said.
To complement the afternoon of great music at the John Brown Farm, exhibits and the Children’s Corner in the lower barn will be open to the public and staff at the John Brown Farm will lead tours of the historic house of the abolitionist Brown family and the gravesite where the remains of John, his sons and other Harpers Ferry Raiders are interred.
Courtesy of the Lake Placid Public Library, a StoryWalk featuring Jason Chin’s picture book “Gravity” is installed on the perimeter of the meadow.
