The online home of everything new and happening in Ireland’s greatest city

You’re sipping your freshly brewed coffee, getting ready for the day, the wind is rustling over the treetops that envelope your lodgings. Through the window, you spot only dots of sunlight, green leaves, and the sturdy legs of the forest.

You’re in a cabin, on the edge of a West Cork woodland and hidden entirely from the world by mature, native Irish alder.

This is the idyllic experience that awaits the first guests at Native Cabins, a new luxury resort and an ambitious rewilding project coming soon to the woodlands of Skibbereen.

The aim of the venture is to give eco-conscious friends and zero-carbon couples the chance to give back to nature while enjoying an unforgettable getaway.

Their motto is simple: ‘You stay in cabins, we plant native trees.’ The project will be Ireland’s first sustainable cabin resort and 20 percent of its profits will go to planting new trees in the area.

“Native was founded on the idea that your travels are an opportunity to enhance and protect the natural environment. We want you to enjoy spending time in the wilderness, and believe the local environment and community can thrive on the back of your adventures,” said owners Didi and Simon Ronan.

As with many ‘ eco-friendly’ initiatives happening these days, often the emissions of construction are overlooked.

At Native Cabins, however, the dwellings are designed by a team of environmentally-conscious architects following principles of light-footed architecture and sustainability.

Each cabin follows a zero carbon construction strategy, meaning more carbon was locked into the building than was emitted in construction and production; using all natural materials, which include local Irish timber, oriented strand board, hemp insulation, wood wool fiber boards, and natural lime render.

“We believe in ‘cradle to grave’ approach to design, where you consider the impact of each stage of the product’s lifecycle,” said Native Cabins on Instagram.

Once the resort is launched, guests will get to participate in rewilding experiences that have been carefully curated to suit interests and abilities. These include discovery, cooking wellbeing, education and adventure.

Prices are expected to be around €250 per night, with breakfast also available. Sign up at [email protected] for launch updates.
